Locally, Matsuyamachi is pronounced "Matchamachi," earning it the nickname "Gotchamachi." This nickname ("gotcha" means jumble) reflects how Osakans traditionally viewed Matsuyamachi as a place to find goods for every occasion. Before May, the street would be bustling with people buying gogatsu ningyo (dolls for the Boys' Festival in May).
