Journey to a Historic Temple on the Mountain

Journey to a Historic Temple on the Mountain

After about an hour’s walk from the station, you will see a magnificent temple perched on the mountain. Founded in 703 AD, this venerable temple boasts a rich history spanning 1,321 years. It flourished as a Kannon pilgrimage site and is renowned for its Kannon deity, believed to cure eye diseases, earning it the affectionate title of "Kannon for the Eyes."

Due to its location on the mountain, the temple offers breathtaking views throughout the year. In spring, cherry blossoms bloom in full glory, and in autumn, the vibrant colors of the foliage enchant visitors. The temple grounds are home to numerous Buddha statues, including the imposing Great Kannon Statue.
This Great Kannon Statue, unveiled in 1983, stands 20 meters tall and weighs 1,200 tons, having arrived from the ancient land of Tenjiku (India). Additionally, in 2007, a 15-meter-tall (including the pedestal) Great Shakyamuni Buddha Stone Statue from Tenjiku was unveiled. The majestic Great Kannon Statue leaves a lasting impression on all who see it.

Surrounded by history, nature, and beautiful Buddha statues, this temple is a wonderful place to soothe the soul. If you have the chance, make sure to visit and experience its serene beauty.
