The History and Symbolism of Sumiyoshi Taisha and its Iconic Sorihashi Bridge
Sumiyoshi Taisha, located in Osaka, is one of Japan's oldest shrines. It was founded in 211 AD by Empress Jingu and serves as the head shrine for the 2,300 Sumiyoshi shrines scattered throughout Japan. Sumiyoshi Taisha is cherished by countless visitors for its rich history and spiritual significance.
#### Sorihashi Bridge – The Icon of Sumiyoshi Taisha
One of the most striking features of Sumiyoshi Taisha is the beautiful Sorihashi Bridge, also known as Taikobashi (Drum Bridge) due to its drum-like reflection in the pond below. This bridge, which gracefully spans the main shrine pond, is recognized as a symbol of Sumiyoshi.
Measuring approximately 20 meters in length, 3.6 meters in height, and 5.5 meters in width, the Sorihashi Bridge is impressive both in size and design. With a maximum incline of about 48 degrees, crossing this bridge is considered a form of purification, and many visitors make it a point to traverse it on their way to the main shrine.
#### Historical Significance and Dedication
The current stone piers of the bridge were donated by Yodogimi, wife of Toyotomi Hideyoshi, during the Keicho era (1596–1615). She dedicated the bridge in hopes of ensuring the healthy growth of her son, Toyotomi Hideyori. In the past, the bridge had only footholds, making it quite dangerous to cross.
#### Sorihashi in Literature
The Nobel Prize-winning author Yasunari Kawabata captured the essence of Sorihashi in his work "Sorihashi" (1948). He wrote, "Descending the Sorihashi is more daunting than ascending it; I was held in my mother's arms," reflecting the steep incline and mystical allure of the bridge.
